Advice from the workshop

Understanding the why behind a repair makes the fix easier to trust. Our advice pages explain how each part works, what happens when it wears, and how the repair restores it.

Repair & Maintenance

Does winter change what you look for?

Yes, mostly at floor level. Months of slush and road salt reach the lowest hinges, the bottom brackets and the loop of each cable before anything else on the door, so those get a close look for rust. The technician also checks whether the bottom seal has been freezing to the slab, how the drive has coped with cold, stiff starts, and whether frost or salt film has been blinding the sensors near the floor. How often should a garage door be tuned up?

Once a year suits most attached garages here, ideally in the fall before cold weather thickens lubricant and stiffens seals. Door and opener makers suggest lubrication every three to six months and a homeowner balance check and reversal test every month, so an annual professional visit sits on top of that light routine. A lightly used door in a detached garage may go longer; a heavily used one, or one exposed to salt spray, benefits from a spring check too. Garage Door Tune-Up

My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?

Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset

What information or photos help before the visit?

A photograph of the whole door from outside, a close-up of the damaged section, a picture of the manufacturer's label if you can find it, and a shot of the inside of the door showing the hinges, tracks and springs. Add the door's approximate width and height, whether it is insulated, its colour and panel style, and how the damage happened. That set often lets the technician confirm availability before arriving. Springs & Hardware

What lubricant is right for a garage door?

A lubricant made for garage doors, applied lightly to hinge knuckles, roller stems and the springs, following the door maker's own recommendation, since the right product and whether bearings are included varies by manufacturer. General-purpose penetrating oils are thin and wash away, and heavy grease attracts grit. Nothing goes on the track raceway or on a nylon or plastic wheel. The opener's chain or screw rail may take a lithium grease according to its manual, and the manual for your door names what its maker prefers. Garage Door Roller Replacement

Can a light bump from the car damage a hinge?

Yes, more often than people expect. The bottom two panels take the contact, and the edge hinge at that joint bends along with the stile behind it, so the panel edges rub and the roller leans. The damage sometimes only shows as a new squeak at the curve. The technician straightens or renews the stile, fits a new hinge and roller, and checks the strut and track on that side. What information helps when I call?

Where the damage is, at floor level, near the curve or overhead; what caused it if you know, such as a bumper or a ladder; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway; whether any roller has come out of the channel; whether there is a spring above the door or springs along the tracks; and the door's rough size. A photo of the damaged length and of a bracket with its screws is very useful. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement

Can a cable be too long or too short for the door?

Yes, and both cause trouble. A cable that is too long runs out of drum groove and starts a second layer over the first, which wears it and throws the balance off near the top of travel. A cable that is too short leaves the door hanging out of level or the drum without a secure wrap. The correct length comes from the door height, the drum and the lift type, so the technician measures rather than guesses. Garage Door Cable Replacement

How old is too old to repair?

Age alone is not the test; parts and safety are. The technician checks the exact model and part numbers, because even a unit from the last two decades can have a board, sensor or trolley that is no longer made. Where the parts are available, a repair is usually straightforward. Where a key part is discontinued with nothing to replace it, or the unit predates photo eyes, replacement is the sounder choice even for a small fault. The technician tells you which side of that line your unit sits on. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

Will the safety reversal be tested as part of the repair?

Always, and after every adjustment, because changing tension, limits or force changes how the operator senses an obstruction. The door is closed onto a 38 mm block on the floor and must return to open on contact, then closed again while the low sensor beam is interrupted and must reverse the same way. If either test fails the settings are revisited until both pass, and you are shown the tests so you can repeat them monthly. Chain-Drive Opener Repair

How long should a belt last once repaired?

A belt's life is counted in cycles and years, and on a balanced door with the rail straight and the tension right it runs for many years. What shortens it is a heavy door, an over-tight adjustment, a bent rail rubbing one edge, or grease on the rubber. Keep the door balanced and lubricated, the belt dry, and glance along the rail a few times a year. Belt-Drive Opener Repair

My old photo eyes still work. Can they stay?

Sensors and head unit are made for each other; a board reads its own maker's sensors, often a particular generation of them, so the pair in the box is what goes on the wall and the old ones come down with the old opener. The new pair sits low at each side of the doorway, roughly a hand's width above the concrete, and the technician confirms their indicator lights are steady before the door is tested against the beam. Installation & Upgrades

What maintenance can I do myself?

Keep the door path and seal contact areas clean, visually observe cables and rollers from a safe position, and use designated handles for occasional manual checks. Test operator safety functions as its instructions describe. Adjustments to springs, cables or bottom fixtures remain technician work because those components carry the counterbalance forces. Sectional Garage Door Replacement

Can I keep the garage door opener I already have?

Possibly, after its identity, condition and compatibility are checked against the new door. The installer reviews door height and weight, track layout, reinforcement, attachment geometry, travel limits, controls and safety sensors. The door is balanced and operated manually before any opener is connected. If the existing unit fits the documented requirements, it can be integrated and tested as part of the installation scope. Why are both positive and negative pressures important?

Wind can push a closed door toward the garage or create suction that draws it outward. Those actions load sections and hardware differently, including rollers, hinges, tracks, and attachments at the jambs. A suitable configuration addresses both directions using the pressure values and details established for the project rather than treating reinforcement as resistance in only one direction. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement

Can a carriage-house door work with low headroom?

It often can, provided the available space is measured and a suitable track and spring arrangement exists for the selected door. Low-headroom layouts change how the top section turns and where hardware sits above the opening. Ceiling obstructions and opener geometry must be considered at the same time, so this condition belongs in the survey before the door configuration is ordered.
